The Competition Law Center at GW Law engages in cutting-edge research and innovative projects that address key challenges in competition law and policy worldwide. Our work spans diverse industries and jurisdictions, providing insights into regulatory developments, enforcement strategies, and the evolving global competition landscape. Through collaborations with international experts, government authorities, and academic institutions, we aim to contribute to the development of effective competition frameworks that promote fair markets, consumer welfare, and economic innovation.

  Research

World Competition Authority Database

  • The CLC also conducts its own competition policy research. As of 2013, the CLC publishes a benchmarking report that analyzes over 120 competition law systems according to important institutional characteristics. This project formed part of United Nations Conference on Trade & Development Research Partnership Platform. Additionally, the CLC has created a unique database that includes profiles for worldwide competition systems.

Journal of Antitrust

  • In cooperation with Oxford University’s Centre for Competition Law and Policy, the CLC edits the Journal of Antitrust Enforcement (JAE), which is published by Oxford University Press. The JAE provides a forum for articles focused on issues related to the design and operation of competition law regimes.

  Projects

Alliance

  • CeCo.
    • The CLC has an alliance with Centro de Competencia (CeCo) of Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez from Chile, which aims to promote and foster competition law and policy along Latin America.

      • On December 2022, The Competition Law Center of the George Washington University (CLC) entered into a partnership with CeCo, aiming to contribute to creating a dialogue space between authorities, the private sector, and scholars for developing and applying competition law and policy in Latin America. Through this alliance, which has already be joined by the Universidad Javeriana in Colombia, the Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador, and Universidad del Pacífico in Peru, the CLC expects to endorse CeCo’s achievements, which among others include building a top of edge technology database project on antitrust decisions; that we believe that it is a scalable model that could be replicated around the world, increasing transparency, accuracy, and certainty in the antitrust litigation and rulemaking processes across jurisdictions.

Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA)

  • In April 2024  ECA and the CLC signed an MOU aiming to cooperate in effective  implementation of competition policy in Egypt, the Arab and African region. In this regard both parties are working together to promote the development of research and training which will enhance competition culture in those regions. Thus CLC and ECA  have created an internship program for ECA officials interested in pursuing research during a semester in GWU facilities. Also the Director of the CLC was part of the team who elaborated the UNCTAD peer review of the Egyptian competition regime presented in July 2024.

SELA (Sistema Económico Latinoamericano)

  • On May 2024, the CLC and SELA signed a MOU aiming to promote competition policy in Latin America. Under this framework both entities created the Latin American academic Competition Forum and also they have conducted judges and officials training across the region.

Concurrences

  • Antitrust Awards
    • The Competition Law Center organizes, jointly with Concurrences, the annual Antitrust Writing Awards. Every year, the Awards recognize the best articles published in the previous year, with the goal of promoting research in competition law and policy.
    • Prof. William Kovacic is a member of the Board of the Concurrences Awards' Jury. The Student Committee, composed of students from The George Washington University Law School mentored by Prof. William Kovacic, selects the award-winning student paper.
    • The 14th edition of the Antitrust Writing Awards is accepting submissions until Friday, November 29, 2024.
    • The award ceremony and gala dinner will take place on April 1, 2025, in Washington, DC.

Bill Kovacic Antitrust Salon

  • Every year, Concurrences and the Competition Law Center organizes the Bill Kovacic Antitrust Salon, at the George Washington University Law School, in Washington, DC.
  • The Salon gathers annually some of the U.S. and world's key antitrust enforcers, scholars, attorneys, economists, and practitioners, to discuss the main topics of the antitrust law and policy agenda.
  • The 2024 edition was organized in partnership with Cornerstone Research, Fried Frank, Paul Weiss, Charles River Associates and Meta on September 9, 2024.
