The competition law regime in Germany is primarily governed by the German Act Against Restrictions of Competition, enacted in 1958. This Act established the Bundeskartellamt (or Federal Cartel Office) as an independent authority with broad mandate to enforce competition laws and ensure fair market competition in Germany at the federal level. Other enforcement bodies have competition law mandates at regional or local levels. The Bundeskartellamt is led by its President, and decisions on cartels, mergers and abusive practices are taken by the agency's thirteen decision divisions.
