The competition regime in Costa Rica is founded on the Law on the Promotion of Competition and Effective Consumer Protection (Law No. 7472, “Ley de Promoción de la Competencia y Defensa Efectiva del Consumidor”), enacted December 20, 1994, and strengthened by Law No. 9736 (2019) – Strengthening the Competition Authorities of Costa Rica (“Ley de Fortalecimiento de las Autoridades de Competencia de Costa Rica”). The enforcement authority is the Commission for the Promotion of Competition (“Comisión para Promover la Competencia”, COPROCOM).
